Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster

Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster

Today, May 21, 2011, I went out to Sokum Ridge Park (the observing site of the Iowa Astronomy Club) and took some images. The sky was pretty dark and clear at about 9:30PM. However, in some distance (maybe above Muscatine, IA) there were lightnings from thunderstorms. At about 11:00PM the clouds and storm arrived at the park and I took off. The Virgo Cluster of galaxies is an area in the sky where literally dozens of galaxies are located. On this image I captured at least 11 galaxies in the field of view of the 200mm lens. Stack of 9 images (ISO 1600, 30s exposure time) taken with the Canon 300D and 200mm/f3.5 Minolta Rokkor lens, riding picky back on a small 4.25 inch reflector mounted on a GP-like motorized mount. Processed using the Iris software.
