I reanalyzed the image of Orion that I took on that day to see if I can find the horsehead nebula next to the star Alnitak. The nebula shows up very faint (marked by arrow). Taken 2011-01-08 at Kent Park near Tiffin, IA. This image was taken piggy back with my Canon 300D and Minolta Rokkor MC f2.8/135mm mounted on a small 4.5" reflector mounted on an Astrozap EQ mount (equivalent to Meade LDX75 mount). The mount was driven by a motor drive in RA declination. The image is a stack of 24 images, each 30s exposure time, ISO 1600.
